Friday Night’s Delays

=

Friday Night's Delays

=20

=20

We would like to apologize for the se=
rvice disruptions during our afternoon and evening service on Friday.=A0 =
They were a result of three separate, but compounding incidents that occu=
rred in the District.

The first incident was a fire on the Lo=
ng Bridge, south of the L=92Enfant station, which required a temporary sh=
utdown of the railroad to allow fire and safety responders access to the =
scene.=A0

=A0

After that incident was cleared and the=
first afternoon trains were released from Union Station, a heat kink was=
found on Track 3 just south of the L=92Enfant station.=A0 This required =
Amtrak 91 and VRE 303 (Departs Union Station at 3:10 PM) to make a revers=
e move and switch to Track 2 in order to continue south to Crystal City.

=A0

At about the same time, one of the over=
head catenary wires that provide power to Amtrak=92s electric locomotives=
fell and was blocking access from the maintenance and storage yards to t=
he station platforms.=A0

=A0

We opened the Metro giving passengers t=
he opportunity to get to Alexandria, where they could catch southbound VR=
E or Amtrak trains south of L=92Enfant.

=A0

We turned our reverse flow train 336 (D=
eparts Broad Run at 2:45 pm), and our deadhead train (stored at Broad Run=
during the midday and returns to Union Station for the PM service) to he=
ad south from Crystal City,=A0 providing southbound alternatives for the =
Manassas line passengers.

=A0

There were, of course, residual delays =
the rest of the evening even after the incidents had all cleared.

=A0

As with all incidents of this magnitude=
we will debrief with our partners at CSX, Amtrak and Keolis to discuss a=
ll of the events and extract =93lessons learned=94 from what was a very c=
hallenging service day.=A0 We sincerely apologize for the delays and appr=
eciate everyone=92s patience.

Heat Restrictions on the Fredericksburg Line for Tuesday 5/31

Tuesday, May 31st, 2016

=

Heat Restrictions on the Fredericksburg Line for Tuesday 5/31

=20

=20

Heat restrictions on the Frederick=
sburg Line=A0today from 1pm-7pm.=A0

Heat related delays accumulate over =
the course of the trip so the farther you go, the longer the delay will b=
e. If your destination is Franconia/Springfield, you will likely not noti=
ce the two minute delay. However, if you travel all the way to Spotsylvan=
ia, the delay will be approximately=A0fourteen minutes. The train crews w=
ill do everything they can to make up time along the way to minimize any =
delays.

If you have further questions, pleas=
e follow=A0this link =A0http://www.vre.org/feedback/frequently_asked_=
questions/faq_heat_orders.htm

As always, thanks for riding VRE.

to L’Enfant.

Update #11:

Train still slowly departing Union Station due to track issues. There =
is currently a Manassas train at Union Station loading passengers.

Update #10:

Track issues at Union Station are=A0still delaying the last few depart=
ures. There is currently a Fredericksburg train at Union Station loading =
passengers.

Update #9:

A Manassas train is currently loading at L’Enfant.

Update #8:

Trains are single tracking between Crystal City and L’Enfant and curre=
ntly trains are moving north. Once that clears, trains will proceed south=
out of Union Station.

Update #7:

Trains are moving south but severely delayed to the all the issues tod=
ay. There=A0are track issues at Union Station and south of L’Enfant.

All passengers at L’Enfant will board at the far track.=A0Please wait =
at the north end of the platform, then wait=A0for the conductors’ instruc=
tions to board.

Update #6:

Because of the sun kink south of L’Enfant, we will not be able to get =
the Manassas train north to L’Enfant. That Manassas equipment is at Cryst=
al City=A0will pick up passengers once safe to do so then proceed south.

Update #5:

There is a sun kink in the rail south of L’Enfant which will further d=
elay the trains. A Fredericksburg train is at L’Enfant now but will be de=
layed going south from there.

iders when trains are moving again.

Update:

Firefighters are still trying to resolve issue and no estimate when ra=
ils will be open again.

Due to the expected extended delays, the M=
etro option is open which mean VRE customers can use Metrorail at no addi=
tional charge by presenting their validated VRE ticket or pass to a Metro=
station manager upon entering and exiting the system. Metro parking char=
ges, however, are not waived.=A0=A0
