Last Night’s Delay on Train 337

Wednesday, June 24th, 2015

=

Last Night’s Delay on Train 337

=20

=20

=20

.  Here’s a summary of wha=
t happened:

At 7:35 pm, Train 337 (Departs Union St=
ation at 6:50 pm) was stopped just North of the Rolling Road station plat=
form due to a large tree blocking both tracks and part of the platform it=
self.  Norfolk Southern was notified and a track maintainer was disp=
atched to assess the situation.

By 7:55 pm, it was determined that remo=
ving the tree and inspecting potential damage to the track was going to b=
e a lengthy process, so we made the decision to have train 337 reverse to=
the Backlick Road platform.  We contacted PRTC and requested buses =
to transport the 200 passengers onboard the train to their destination st=
ations.

At 8:23 pm, train 337 encountered anoth=
er tree blocking the track during their reverse move.  That tree was=
small enough to be removed without much delay, and 337 was able to reach=
Backlick Road.  VRE staff was on hand at the station to assist with=
the transfer of passengers to the buses and to answer any questions or a=
ddress concerns.

At 9:34 pm, the PRTC buses arrived at B=
acklick Road.  It is important to note that bus companies do not hav=
e a reserve fleet of buses or drivers on standby at all times, so, as is =
usually the case, these buses were ones that had just completed their nor=
mal routes and were asked to extend their shifts to assist us.

At 10:47 pm, we were notified by PRTC t=
hat all buses had dropped off passengers at their destination stations.

Once again, we would like to apologize =
to any passengers affected by this delay.  We would also like to tha=
nk our partners at Keolis, PRTC, and Norfolk Southern for everything they=
did to help minimize the delay.

VRE Safety Bulletin 6/23-24/15 Post-adverse Weather Safety

The storms that passed through the area during Tuesday night’s commu=
te we nothing short of intense. The strong winds and rain arrived quickly=
and knocked down trees, power lines and the rain placed many low lying a=
reas in contention for flash flooding.

VRE service was not spared during this storm either as we had to termi=
nate 337 at Backlick Road due to fallen trees across the tracks. (We will=
provide a full recap of this in a later email.)

For now we’d like to take a breath and offer some tips on staying safe=
overnight and into the morning commute.

1)Power lines: They are down in many areas around the region. Do not d=
rive or walk over them. Always assume they are energized and stay away. R=
emember, the risk of arcs means you don’t have to necessarily touch a wir=
e for it to electrocute you.

2)Flooded roads: These are a factor now and will continue to be a fact=
or into Wednesday. Never drive through a flooded road, especially where t=
he water is moving. It takes only a few inches to cause a loss of contact=
with the road

3)”Dark” Intersections: Remember, when traffic signals lose power, eac=
h intersection should be treated as a four way stop. Do not make any assu=
mptions about other cars and get a visual on opposing traffic before proc=
eeding through an intersection.

4)Sump pump maintenance: Remember to unplug your pump and any reserve =
power supply before contact with the water.

5)Back-up Generators: Many of us use them and they are quite handy, bu=
t please remember not to run them inside your house. Carbon monoxide can =
silently build up and before you are aware of it- it can be too late.

=

6)Power Outage Candles: Burn them only under constant supervision. Tho=
usands of house fires start each year due to unattended candles.

7)Tree Limbs: These can be huge hazards in their own right. Be alert t=
o broken or hanging limbs on your property and be careful not to overexer=
t yourself attempting to move a large limb.

Remember, there is nothing associated with this storm worth your life,=
health and wellbeing. Play it safe, avoid unnecessary risks and we’ll lo=
ok forward to seeing you aboard soon!

Safe Travels,

VRE Operations and Safety Team
