Tonight’s Manassas Line Service Disruption

Monday, September 29th, 2014

=

Tonight=92s Manassas Line Service Disruption

=20

=20

We apologize to all the riders who were affected by the significant =
interruption on the Manassas Line. At approximately 2:30pm, we received i=
nformation from Fairfax County that the police were conducting an investi=
gation south of Burke Centre around the railroad right of way and had to =
stop all rail traffic through that area. Subsequently, we sent out a Trai=
n Talk that this police activity could disrupt the Manassas Line.

We immediately contacted WMATA to open the Metrorail Option for our ri=
ders. At the same time we asked for buses from them and other area transi=
t agencies to pick up passengers from Burke Centre since that was as far =
as our trains were allowed to go. The buses then would transport passenge=
rs from Burke Centre to their final VRE station.

Unfortunately, we had two train sets south of the investigation at Bro=
ad Run that would normally go north and operate southbound trains. Since =
we could not get those trains north, we had to cancel two Manassas Line t=
rains; 329 (Departs Union Station at 4:25pm) and 335 (Departs Union Stati=
on at 5:30pm). We sent messages out at approximately 4:00pm stating this =
when we confirmed that the railroad was not going to be opened anytime so=
on.

We thank both PRTC and Fairfax Connector getting buses there in a time=
ly fashion during rush hour. We could not have asked for more perfect tim=
ing as the first buses arrived before and during Manassas 327’s (De=
parts Union Station at 3:45pm) arrival to Burke Centre.

After that, the investigation concluded and the railroad was opened ba=
ck up at approximately 5:40pm. This delayed Manassas 331 (Departs Union S=
tation at 5:05pm) about 10 minutes but was the first train that was allow=
ed south past Burke Centre.

We appreciate your patience during these delays and always work to min=
imize the disruption while keeping you safe. Appreciation also goes to ou=
r railroad partners at Amtrak, Norfolk Southern and CSX for their flexibi=
lity allowing us to change around crews, equipment, and operations to min=
imize disruptions.
