Safety Reminder

We have seen a lot of rain over the past two days and wanted to remind=
you to please take your time during your entire commute today. While the=
holiday is on the back of everyone’s mind, in order to enjoy that holida=
y please use situational awareness at all times and be mindful of slippin=
g/tripping hazards.

Equipment Swaps for Today, November 2=
7th for Early Rush

Today, the Wednesday before Thanksgivi=
ng, is historically the biggest day when commuters leave early. We antici=
pate extremely heavy loads on Fredericksburg Line Trains #301 (Departs Un=
ion Station 12:55pm), #303 (Departs Union Station (3:35pm) and Manassas L=
ine Trains #325 (Departs Union Station 1:15pm), #327 (Departs Union Stati=
on 3:45pm). #301, #303, and #327 will all have eight cars while #325 will=
have seven cars. Although these trains will have the most cars, we still=
anticipate extreme crowding.

If possible, we encourage commuters to=
wait and ride later trains such as Manassas Line Train #329 (Departs Uni=
on Station 4:25pm) and Fredericksburg Line #305 (Departs Union Station 4:=
10p,) if you want to have a seat and not deal with the crowding.

Another alternative for Fredericksburg=
Line riders are the Amtrak Cross Honor trains. Below are the schedules f=
or the Amtrak trains that depart early afternoon:

. Also please contact Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) to make s=
ure they have room to accommodate you. If there are not enough seats, the=
conductors can deny VRE passengers boarding.

Thanksgiving Schedule

Please remember that VRE will not oper=
ate service on Thanksgiving Day, November 28th. We will operate an “S” Sc=
hedule on Friday, November 29th which means the only trains that will run=
are the ones listed with an “S” above its train number on the published =
schedule. Regular service will resume Monday, December 2nd.

Reversed Consists for Manassas Line=
Today

While we missed the freezing precipita=
tion today, the rain in combination with the fallen leaves makes for a sl=
ippery ride on the rails. As a result, Trains #325 (Departs Union Station=
at 1:15pm), Train #336 (Departs Broad Run at 2:45pm), Train #327 (Depart=
s Union Station at 3:45pm), Train #329 (Departs Union Station at 4:25pm),=
Train # 338 (Departs Broad Run at 5:10pm) and Train #337 (Departs Union =
Station at 6:50pm) locomotives will be on the north end today to lessen a=
nticipated delays due to leaf oil on the tracks. The Quiet Car will rema=
in the closest car to the engine.

Weather Advisory

Monday, November 25th, 2013

=

Weather Advisory

=20

=20

=20

=20

Just in case you haven’t heard because you are busy making Thanksgiv=
ing plans, there is a winter weather advisory in effect for our area from=
4am to 1pm on Tuesday. It is supposed to start off with some sleet and s=
now then change to rain later in the morning. While we do no expect this =
to affect VRE service, we wanted to take the opportunity to give you some=
winter safety tips.

Wear a hat, scarf, gloves, a water-resistant coat and boots and sever=
al layers of loose-fitting clothing.

Be sure the outer layer of your clothing is tightly woven, preferably=
wind resistant, to reduce body-heat loss caused by wind.

Wool, silk, or polypropylene inner layers of clothing will hold more =
body heat than cotton. Stay dry—wet clothing chills the body rapidl=
y. Excess perspiration will increase heat loss, so remove extra layers of=
clothing whenever you feel too warm. Also, avoid getting gasoline or alc=
ohol on your skin while de-icing and fueling your car or using a snow blo=
wer. These materials in contact with the skin greatly increase heat loss =
from the body. Do not ignore shivering. It’s an important first sign that=
the body is losing heat. Persistent shivering is a signal to return indo=
ors.

Avoid Exertion – Cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart. If y=
ou have heart disease or high blood pressure, follow your doctor’s advice=
about shoveling snow or performing other hard work in the cold. Otherwis=
e, if you have to do heavy outdoor chores dress warmly and work slowly. R=
emember, your body is already working hard just to stay warm, so don’t ov=
erdo it.

Please allow yourself plenty of time to get to the station and make s=
ure you hold on to those handrails when using the stairs to the platforms=
or on the train. Wear sensible shoes and be on the lookout for icy spots=
in the parking lots and on the platforms. Our crews w=
ill be working all night to keep the stations, parking lots and other fac=
ilities in the best shape possible. This does not relieve you of the resp=
onsibility to look out for your safety and the safety of your fellow pass=
enger. Again, be very careful when entering parking facilities and especi=
ally on stairs and when boarding trains. Always stand back from the edge =
of the platform.

We plan on operating full schedule tomorrow, Tuesday, November 26th, b=
ut if anything changes, we will alert passengers as soon as possible.

17th Annual Operation Lifesaver Santa Trains

Friday, November 8th, 2013

=

17th Annual Operation Lifesaver Santa Trains

=20

=20

=20

=20
VRE’s 17th Annua=
l Operation Lifesaver Santa Trains

=
Every year just before Christmas, kids and their parents are given the op=
portunity to ride a train and meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, who are on board=
VRE trains to promote rail safety and Operation Lifesaver’s &ldquo=
;Look, Listen and Live” campaign. There will be plenty of Santa&rsq=
uo;s helpers joining in handing out candy canes and coloring books, along=
with high school choral groups and other festivity-makers.

=
We know it has been a long wait (as some of you have been anxious about S=
anta Trains since summer), but information on the ever popular Operation =
Lifesaver Santa Trains is finally here!

=
The event, taking place on Saturday, December 14th uses this opportunity =
to remind people of the importance of rail safety. So remember, that this=
event is not just for fun, but it also has a serious and important messa=
ge: “Look, listen and live!” from Operation Lifesaver. The Santa trains w=
ill run out of four stations: Burke Centre, Fredericksburg, Manassas and =
Woodbridge.

=
In addition, Operation Lifesaver Santa Trains also work in conjunction wi=
th the Marine Corps Toys for Tots. So on December 14th, our Fredericksbur=
g, Manassas, Burke Centre, and Woodbridge stations will be drop off sites=
for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Campaign. We are, therefore, encourag=
ing everyone to bring a toy to the Santa Trains so that someone less fort=
unate in the Virginia area can share in the joys of the holidays.http://v=
re.org/seasonal/santa_trains/availability.html.

=
Tickets go on sale Monday November 25th at 9 a.m. More information about =
ticket sales and trains can be found here=
.

=
The tickets sell out fast, both online and in person. Last year, VRE sold=
7,500 tickets. Online tickets were gone in minutes and all vendors sold =
out of their tickets by noon.

Support the Mar=
ine Corps Toys for Tots

‘Tis the Season for Giving

=
VRE will be holding its annual Toys for Tots on board collection on Wedne=
sday, December 11th.

=
Once again, we are helping the U.S. Marine Corps to distribute toys to le=
ss fortunate children that might not otherwise receive any gifts during t=
he holidays. The toys and donations by VRE riders will go towards making =
the holidays for underprivileged children in Washington a more special an=
d exciting time.

=
Participating is easy. Leave an unwrapped, new toy on your seat when you =
detrain that morning and our conductors will collect the toys after the t=
rain reaches the storage yard. Conductors will also be accepting donation=
checks and gift cards for the event. Please make your checks payable to:=
“Toys for Tots.”

=
VRE riders have always been very generous in the past and we would like t=
o continue this tradition by helping make this holiday season special for=
children who may not be as fortunate as others.

=
Also, Amtrak will have a drop off for Toys for Tots in Union Station on D=
ecember 11th and 12th. If you forget to bring a toy, feel free to ride to=
Union Station and donate there.

=
And remember, in conjunction with Santa Trains, we will also collect toys=
before you board. There are lots of opportunities for giving, so be sure=
to take advantage!
