Stay Safe!

VRE is a growing system with mor=
e an more passengers boarding our trains daily. With more growth projecte=
d in the coming years, our host railroads are helping us keep our passeng=
ers safe by installing signs and fencing at stations where platforms exis=
t on both sides of the tracks. CSX Baltimore Division employees are shown=
above installing signage at Woodbridge.

Our goal is to remind passengers that running directly across the =
tracks to catch a train or to enter or exit the station is not only illeg=
al, but very unsafe. Help us keep VRE a safe place!

Bike Parking

As a reminder, please do not leave bike=
s on platforms. Platforms are often crowded during service hours and besi=
de the risk of damage to your bike, we’d like to accommodate passengers c=
omfortably while they wait to board.

Master Agreement Survey

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013

=

Master Agreement Survey

=20

=20

=20

=20

When VRE was created a “Master Agreement” was formed bet=
ween the owning jurisdictions. As part of that agreement, a survey is con=
ducted every October. The purpose of the survey is to determine where our=
ridership comes from. Based on the results of this survey, VRE and juris=
dictional staff determine the subsidy that each owning city and county co=
ntributes to VRE operations.

Tomorrow, October 23, VRE will hold this year’s Master Agreement=
Survey on all morning trains. This is a very important survey and it is =
also a VERY short survey. Please take the time to fill out this survey an=
d hand it to one of the survey workers or the conductors on board the tra=
in.

The most common feedback we receive on this survey is that we are aski=
ng the wrong questions and that we need to be asking more about our rider=
s’ experiences on the train. That is a separate survey that is held=
each year in May. In the meanwhile, if you have any thoughts you would l=
ike to share about VRE’s performance, please send an email to gotrains@vre.org.

Attention SmartBenefits Recipients

=20

=20

=20

=20
A message to VRE passengers who use Electronic SmartBenefits to pay=
for their VRE tickets:

Due to the Federal Government shutdown =
there is uncertainty surrounding the issuance of November SmartBenefits. =
Allocations made through the SmartBenefits program may be affected. If yo=
u currently use CommuterDirect, the Crystal City Commuter Store, the Spri=
ngfield Commuter Store, or Old Town Transit in Alexandria, please contact=
those locations directly to verify the status of your November benefits.=
If your employer is not providing benefits for November or has not relea=
sed the funds to CommuterDirect, you will need to make other arrangements=
for the payment of your fare media.

If you know now that you will need a No=
vember VRE ticket and are not receiving your normal benefits, please be r=
eady to provide Commuter Direct with an alternate form of payment. If Com=
muter Direct does not receive a payment for your ticket—Smart Benef=
its, credit card, cash, or check—they will not issue a November tic=
ket.

Please contact CommuterDirect by email =
at questions@CommuterDire=
ct.com or visit their website at www.commuterdire=
ct.com with any questions regarding your account.

If you allocate your SmartBenefits to t=
he 7-11’s at Lafayette Blvd or Deacon Rd, Rick’s Roasters at =
Quantico, The Coffee Club at Woodbridge, or Don’s Depot at Broad Ru=
n, we hope to have those funds available by the afternoon of Monday, Nove=
mber 4th.

To assist our monthly pass holders, we =
will extend the grace period for the October Monthly passes through Wedne=
sday, November 6th.  If the government reopens and benefi=
ts have been restored in time to get the benefits distributed, there will=
not be a need to extend the grace period.

We will continue to update you as we ge=
t new information.

Columbus Day

This is a reminder that we will run=
an “S” schedule on Columbus Day (Monday, October 14th).

The “S” stands for &ldq=
uo;special”. Trains marked with an “S” operat=
e every VRE service day, and they are the only trains that oper=
ate when VRE is on its ”S” schedule. “S&rdquo=
; schedule days typically occur during times of inclement weather or arou=
nd certain holidays.

Clifton Day

Join us this Sunday, Oct. 13 at Clifton Day for food, fun, and uniq=
ue craft and antique shopping!

This family-friendly festival on October 13 provides day-long fun i=
n the heart of historic Clifton, VA. With live music, great food, unique =
craft vendors, and antique shopping there is something for everyone. Don’=

omping demonstrations too. Make this year’s visit to the Clifton Day fest=
ival extra-special by taking the train!

VRE System Plan Webinar

VRE is preparing a Sys=
tem Plan to provide a framework for growing the system and responding=
to current and future travel needs in the northern Virginia and Washingt=
on, DC regions. The plan will evaluate potential service improvement and =
system expansion initiatives to ensure future VRE capacity bests meet reg=
ional travel needs. While the plan will not guarantee specific levels of =
service or funding, it will inform VRE Operations Board decision-making a=
nd will reflect VRE’s priorities and role in the region’s transportation =
system. A summary of ideas suggested to date for consideration in the VRE=
System Plan =
can be found here.

As the System Plan is developed, we want to hear VRE rider thought=
s about system needs and future service. A System Plan Webinar will be held on October 9, 2013 from 12:0=
0 to 1:00 PM
. It will include a brief presentation about the pot=
ential system development and service ideas being considered and an oppor=
tunity for webinar participants to ask questions of the presenters.

Advance registration is required for the webinar. Register here to participate in the webinar.

If you have a question for the webinar presenters,=
please send it to VRESystemPlan=
@vre.org. We will provide responses to the questions asked in the web=
inar on our webpage following the webinar presentation.
