Fredericksburg Line Track Work

=20

Beginning October 7th, CSX will replace ties and surface track between=
Alexandria and Featherstone (switch south of Woodbridge). The track work=

Gray Line Bus Tour Location Change

=

Gray Line Bus Tour Location Change

=20

Our Union Station ticket vendor, Gray Line Bus Tour, has moved into th=
eir new location. They are still on the same level, just in the new Greyh=
ound building. For those of you familiar with the previous location, if y=
ou go past there and turn left into the garage, they are in the Greyhound=
building on the very left of that building. They are again able to proce=
ss all forms of payment for VRE tickets.

Thanks for riding VRE.

Lorton Lighting Project

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

=

Lorton Lighting Project

=20

Effective October 1, Fairfax County will begin a lighting project at t=
he Lorton Station parking lot. The project will last for approximately o=
ne month. The contractor will close off a few parking spaces near the ma=
in electrical transformer so that they can get access for their boring ma=
chine, and will also close off spaces as they set the new poles and remov=
e the old ones. The flyer that was placed on cars in the lot indicated t=
hat half the lot would be closed. That is not the case. Only spaces adj=
acent to where the crews are working will be closed off, and all driving =
lanes should remain open throughout the project. If your car remains in a=
spot the contractor needs to access, it will simply be relocated to anot=
her area of the lot.

Please see the attached photo. The spots that are marked will not all =
be closed at the same time, only when the work is being done in that part=
icular area. We will work with the contractor and Fairfax County to make=
sure that any inconveniences for our passengers are minimized. If you h=
ave any questions or comments, please forward them to gotrains@vre.org .

Thank you for your patience as Fairfax County works to improve your co=
mmuting experience.

Volunteer “Victims” Needed for VRE Emergency Drill

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

=

Volunteer “Victims” Needed for VRE Emergency Drill

=20

Each year VRE conducts a simulated train disaster – the goal of =
this is to test VRE’s federally approved Emergency Preparedness Plan as w=
ell as our security preparedness. During the simulated disaster, local, s=
tate and federal first responders test their skills in responding to the =
train emergency, and VRE also gauges our crew, our railroad partners’ and=
our staffs’ preparedness for addressing any train emergency. This year’=
s drill will take place in Alexandria, VA. As we do every year, we are lo=
oking for volunteers to be victims of this simulated train disaster.

The drill will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012. Volunteer victim=
s need to arrive no later than 7:30AM. The volunteers will be free to lea=
ve no later than 1 PM that afternoon.

We are limiting the number of participants this year so if you are int=
erested email us at gotrains@vre.org. Please put Volunteer Victim in you=
r subject line. First email, first served.

Additional instructions including directions to event location will be=
provided closer to the event. A waiver form will be required to be signe=
d by each participant including minors/children, prior to the event.

Fairfax=E2=80=99s New, Convenient Bus Service Will Connect B=
urke
with Tysons Corner

The Fairfax County Departmen=
t of Transportation (FCDOT)
will launch a new Express Connector bus service in January, connecting
commuters in the Burke community with quick, reliable access to Tysons Co=
rner.
Running on the 495 Express Lanes, the no-transfer service is a convenient=
way
for commuters to enjoy a stress-free ride to work.
Bus routes will provide limi=
ted-stop services between the
Burke Center VRE station and Tysons Corner, with circulations serving man=
y
major employers in the Tysons area. The trip from Burke to the last stop =
in
Tysons Corner will take about one hour, with one-way fares tentatively se=
t at
$3.65. Riders can use the commute time to work in a comfortable, relaxed
environment.
&nb=
sp;
Additional bus services to T=
ysons Corner will be launching
from Springfield and Lorton in the following months.

Previously in the Burke comm=
unity, there was no direct
bus service to Tysons Corner, as Burke commuters endured clogged roads an=
d
hours behind the wheel. The launch of this enhanced service shows FCDOT=E2=
=80=99s
commitment to providing efficient, productive bus transit to all commuter=
s in
Fairfax County, and its emphasis on reducing traffic congestion.

=E2=80=9CWe encourage Burke =
community residents and Tyson Corner
employers to rethink commuting and discover this new way to get to and fr=
om
work,=E2=80=9D said FCDOT spokeswoman Ellen Kamilakis. =E2=80=9CThis one-=
seat trip will offer
riders simple connections, save time and money, and provide a pleasant pl=
ace to
work during the commute.=E2=80=9D

Starting weekday mornings in=
January, buses will depart
from Burke for Tysons Corner from 6:30-9 a.m., serving select Fairfax Con=
nector
stops before entering the Express Lanes. Buses will depart from Tysons Co=
rner
for Burke weekday afternoons from 4:15-7 p.m. The service will offer midd=

VRE Mobile App Information

We added two web pages on our website for mo=
bile app
purposes. One is to provide mobile app developers access to our GTFS form=
atted
data and the other to provide accessible download links to submitted mobi=
le
apps. The GTFS packages provide VRE static and real time information that=
these
developers can use to easily capture data being presented on their mobile=
app
product. The GTFS package is being driven by TRIP and the entries we ente=
r on a
daily basis, either manually or automatically.

On the developer page, there=
is a link for both the GTFS
information and the submission form for a completed mobile app product. T=
his
form then transmits to VRE via email through Google apps. From this step,=
we
can try and preview the app and then make a decision to either send it ba=
ck to
the developer for further enhancement or present a link to the mobile app=

download page from our website.

Please let us know if you ha=
ve further questions. Thank you.
Screen shots can be captured through the website www.vre.org.

A Reminder About Validating Tickets

What is =E2=80=9CValidating=E2=
=80=9D?
Validating a ticket is the p=
rocess of applying the value of
one ride from your ticket to your current trip on the train. For example, if you purchased a 10-Ride
ticket, you have the value of 10 rides stored on that ticket. The value for a single ride is not deducted
from the ticket until you validate. Once
you have validated 10 times, there is no remaining value on that ticket.
Likewise, if you fail to validate your ticket
for a ride, the value of that ride has not been deducted, and you may rec=
eive a
summons to appear in court for riding on a ticket that has not been valid=
ated.
An analogy from the world ou=
tside of transit would be a Gift
Card. For example, if you purchase a $50
Gift Card from Lowe=E2=80=99s, you can apply the value of merchandise you=
wish to
purchase to that card, and the value on the card would be reduced by the =
amount
of your purchase. You cannot, however,
go into Lowe=E2=80=99s and just take $50 worth of merchandise and leave. Validating your ticket at a VRE TVM is
analogous to taking your merchandise at Lowe=E2=80=99s to the checkout st=
and and
swiping your gift card to use those funds for the purchase.
In all of our communications about the need to vali=
date
tickets prior to boarding the train, we emphasize that if you have a tick=
et
issue, please see the conductor before you get on the train. Otherwise you have boarded a train without a
valid ticket. The issues could range
anywhere from your ticket not being read properly by the TVM, or the
communication lines were down so you were unable to complete your
purchase. Running late for your train or
simply forgetting to validate are not the types of ticket issues we are
referring to.

Upcoming Track Work on CSX

CSX will replace ties and surface track between
Alexandria and Rippon beginning September 30. The work
will start on Track #2 (the far track) in Alexandria and will eventually =
affect both tracks.

The teams will begin work af=
ter the passage of the last
VRE evening train and conclude before train #300 arrives in the work area=
. Slow orders will be applied for a period of time on all areas of
disturbed track. The work should conclude by December 1.

We appreciate your patience =
and cooperation as CSX works to
improve their infrastructure.
