Train Talk:Weekly Newsletter
October 25, 2011 2:28 PM

The following is in this edition of Train Talk:
1) ATTENTION I-66 COMMUTERS!
2) COURTESY CORNER!
3) Friday, Nov. 11th, Veterans Day – No VRE Service

1) ATTENTION I-66 COMMUTERS!

If you commute in the I-66 corridor, VDOT and DRPT would like to hear from you! You could be commuting on I-66, U.S. 29, U.S. 50, Washington Boulevard, Clarendon Boulevard or other roadways in the corridor headed either east or west on your morning commute at least 3 days a week. You could be driving alone, riding a motorcycle, commuting in a carpool or vanpool, slugging, riding the bus, taking the train, riding a bicycle, or walking. You must be traveling INSIDE THE BELTWAY for at least part of your commute. Findings from this important online survey will inform the on-going I-66 Multimodal Study inside the Beltway. If you are one of the first 100 to respond to this announcement, qualify for and complete the survey, you will receive a $5.00 gourmet coffee card. To complete the survey, simply click on this link:

2) COURTESY CORNER!

Three courtesy suggestions from fellow riders:

1. If you have a bike rack attached to the back of your car, could you please park far enough into the space so that folks walking in the dark don’t accidently knock themselves out.

2. Please remind folks to park in the spaces correctly. Taking up 2 spaces is not cool nor is hightailing it out of the parking space after work.

3. Please remind folks that if they are going to smoke, not to smoke in people’s faces. Remember, smoking is only allowed at the northern most end of each station.

3) Friday, Nov. 11th, Veterans Day – No VRE Service

Friday, Nov. 11th is Veterans Day. There will be no VRE service on this day. Service will resume Monday, November 14th.

The following is in this edition of Train Talk:
1) Full Service for the Fredericksburg Line Tonight
2) Volunteer Victims Needed for Emergency Simulation Drill
3) Please Keep Interior Doors Closed

1) Full Service for the Fredericksburg Line Tonight

We apologize for the mechanical issue that caused 302 to be canceled this morning. The issue has been corrected and all trains will be running this evening.

2) Volunteer Victims Needed for Emergency Simulation Drill

Each year VRE conducts a simulated train disaster – the goal of this is to test VRE’s federally approved Emergency Preparedness Plan as well as our security preparedness. During the simulated disaster, local first responders test their skills in responding to the train emergency, and VRE also gauges our crew, our railroad partners’ and our staffs’ preparedness for addressing any train emergency. This year’s drill will take place in Alexandria, VA. As we do every year, we are looking for volunteers to be victims of this simulated train disaster. The drill will be held on Saturday, November 12. Volunteer victims need to arrive by 7am and should be done by noon.

We are limiting the number of participants this year so if you are interested email us at gotrains@vre.org. Please put Volunteer Victim in your subject line. First email, first served.

3) Please Keep Interior Doors Closed

Its getting that time a year when the weather gets cooler and to help keep the interior of the cars warmer we ask that riders do not leave the interior doors to the vestibule open unless the train is stopped and you are getting off or on the train.

Also, for safety reasons, please keep the interior doors to the vestibule closed until the train comes to a full stop. If an emergency braking situation were to occur the last thing we would want would be for individuals fall into the vestibule steps and hurt themselves.

So for courtesy, as well as safety reasons, please keep the interior doors shut.

Thank you for your cooperation.
