Train Talk:News You Can Use!
April 29, 2011 3:22 PM

Monday, May 2nd Changes

Last week we sent out an email regarding our “Standing Means Detraining” policy in response to excessive queuing onboard many of our trains. One of the biggest contributing factors to queuing is the extreme crowding that many have and continue to experience. Unfortunately in the past, due to lack of storage space at our yards, it was an experience that we were unable to do anything about. That is until now, now meaning May 2nd.

On May 2nd, several positive things will happen for riders. One, we will finally be able to add more cars. Because we have received permission from our host railroads to return one of our train sets to Broad Run instead of leaving it in Washington D.C. we were able to free up yard storage space and we will now be able to add cars to trains 300, 313, 310, 311, 312, 301, 326 and 329. These extra cars will provide an additional 700 seats to our service.

Also on May 2nd, in our continued attempt to combat crowding, riders will be able to utilize the Amtrak cross honor agreement at a cheaper price as Step-Up tickets drop from $10 to $5. This reduction in cost should allow many of you who ride the more crowded trains the option to take the nearest Amtrak train, which will once again alleviate crowding. Amtrak options, for example, would be Burke Centre and Manassas riders who ride the very crowded Manassas Line train 329 (departing Union Station at 4:25pm) choosing instead to take Amtrak train #171, which departs Union Station at 4:50pm. While it operates a bit later, it is less crowded, has more legroom and a café car. On the Fredericksburg Line, express train riders will be able to shorten your day by taking Amtrak train #95, which leaves Union Station at 2:30pm. (Note: for those riders unfamiliar with Step-Ups, they must be used in conjuction with a 5 day, 10 ride or Monthly ticket and they are only good for use within the VRE service zones). Other Amtrak trains in which Step-Ups can be used are shown on our “Rider’s Guide” and on our website.

Also, to note, trains 302 and 306 will switch consist lengths as 306 has now surpassed train 302 in numbers of riders.

We’re happy to able to make these changes. But we realize that ridership will continue to grow and we will continue to need to find more creative and innovative ways to adapt and grow with it.

2) Bring Your Child To Work Day is this Thursday April 28th!

On Thursday, April 28th, many commuters will have a great opportunity to see a kid’s spin on their workday (and their commute). That’s because April 28 is the annual “Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® Day!” The event, organized by the Ms. Foundation for Women in 1993, was originally designed to help America’s young women become more visible, valued and heard in our society. The program has been expanded to both boys and girls, giving thousands of children the opportunity to learn how work, family and community life intersect.

VRE has strongly supported “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” by allowing school age children to ride free with their parents that day and we’re proud to participate again this year.

Kids will have a great introduction to their parents’ work world, and kids will get a first-hand look at the advantages of mass transit.

For more information about the program, and to find out ways to make the event more meaningful for your own child, visitwww.DaughtersandSonstoWork.org for up-to the minute information on this year’s program and to see what an array of workplaces are planning for the day.
