Train Talk:Norfolk Southern Track Work Update
April 30, 2010 10:53 AM

The following is in this edition of Train Talk:
1) First Things First 13 Train 335 and Train 338 Cancelled This Evening
2) Norfolk Southern Track Work
3) Last Night 19s Delays
4) This Morning 19s Delays
5) What to Expect Tonight
6) When Will it Be Over

1) First Things First 13 Train 335 and Train 338 Cancelled This Evening

This Train Talk, we 19re going to do a bit backwards, mostly because we think that this information is the most important. As a result of the track work that is occurring on the Manassas Line, VRE has decided to cancel Train 335 (Departing Union Station at 6:10pm) and Train 338 (Departing Broad Run at 5:10pm) this evening. As explained later, this is being done to minimize delays to our rush hour trains.

2) Norfolk Southern Track Work

As we announced on Tuesday, Norfolk Southern is performing some track work on the Manassas Line this week. Norfolk Southern is resurfacing the track, adding ballast (stone material that forms the base of the rail bed), and tamping the surface to allow it to settle more quickly. Whenever tracks are disturbed, regardless of the railroad, slow orders are put in place until the track material settles, which is determined by the amount of tonnage that goes over the track.

The original estimation was that there would be 5 miles of slow orders, which would add a delay of about 10 minutes. However, the resurfacing team is working much quicker than expected, so longer slow orders are needed. Today, for instance, there are just about 10 miles of slow orders. At 25 mph, that will cause longer delays.

3) Last Night 19s Delays

As many of our long-time Manassas Line riders know, we have 1Cturnback trains 1D on the Manassas Line. These trains operate a rush hour train, then double back to operate a second rush hour run. When track work is occurring, and we are reduced to a single track, these turnback trains end up being like a salmon swimming upstream against the regular rush hour traffic. For instance, the equipment that operates as train 327 (Departing Union Station at 3:45pm) becomes northbound train 338, returning to Union Station. The equipment then runs a third time in the evening as train 337 (Departing Union Station at 6:50pm).

Last night, Norfolk Southern track crews were working on the track, giving only one track for the operation of trains. Train 338 was given permission to go northbound ahead of train 329 (Departing Union Station at 4:25pm). As a result, train 329 was held for 36 minutes waiting for the northbound train. It then experienced an additional 20 minutes delay due to the slow orders. This created a domino effect for the remaining trains that evening. FRCs were handed out on trains 329 and 331.

4) This Morning 19s Delays

Track workers were back once again this morning to work on the track resurfacing project. While most trains saw delays of 10-15 minutes. Some were a bit longer than that, partially due to a switch problem south of L 19Enfant and train congestion.

5) What to Expect Tonight

After talking with Norfolk Southern this morning, they anticipate similar issues tonight as we saw last night. To keep trains from being held up by the northbound turnback train, we have decided to cancel train 338 (Departing Broad Run at 5:10pm) and train 335 (Departing Union Station at 6:10pm). Train 335's normal equipment will be used to operate train 337, the last train of the evening, departing Union Station at 6:50pm. However, cumulative delays of 15-20 minutes can be expected on all trains as they travel through the slow orders.

6) When Will it Be Over

Norfolk Southern expects to be done with the resurfacing project this weekend. They plan on running some heavy freight trains through the corridor to help speed the settling process. At this time, we do not expect any track work or slow orders on Monday. However, if that changes, we will be sure to let you know.
