Public Hearings Regarding Crowding, L’Enfant Storage, and a Fredericksburg Express Train

As part of a continuing dialogue regarding possible VRE service changes in July, we will hold several public hearings beginning March 10th.

The service changes would include the addition of a Fredericksburg express train as well as the morning termination and evening origination of two train sets at the L’Enfant VRE station.

Crowding onboard trains has become a major issue for many of our riders. Unfortunately, we have not been able to add the necessary cars needed to our trains due to storage limitations. Basically, there is absolutely no space available for us to park longer trains sets.

We have proposed a solution that would begin in July, whereby two morning trains (one on each line) and two evening trains (one on each line) would terminate and originate at the L’Enfant VRE station. As such, these particular trains would not serve Union Station. This proposal would open up mid-day storage which would then allow the following to occur:

• Addition of a new express train to leave Fredericksburg at 5:05am and make stops at Fredericksburg, Leeland Road, Brooke, Alexandria, Crystal City, L’Enfant, and Union Station
• Addition of two cars to Manassas Line trains 326 and 329
• Addition of one car to Fredericksburg Line trains 308 and 311
• Addition of two cars to Fredericksburg Line trains 300 and 307

As it is challenging to determine which trains would terminate at L’Enfant, we initiated a public outreach campaign on February 1, 2010 to seek comment on the proposal. VRE staff suggested Manassas Line train 330 and Fredericksburg Line train 304 would terminate at L’Enfant in the morning and Fredericksburg Line train 301 and Manassas Line train 333 would originate at L’Enfant in the evening.

We received numerous comments both supporting and opposing the proposal as well as many questions. After a preliminary review of the comments, it became obvious that a full comment period would benefit both VRE and the rider.

Public hearings will be held in D.C., Alexandria, Woodbridge, Fredericksburg, Manassas, and Burke Centre. Times and locations are as follows:

Wed. March 10, 7PM: Rappahannock Regional Library, Theatre Room – 1201 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401

Tue. March 16, 7PM: Manassas City Hall, City Council Chamber Room – 9027 Center Street, Manassas, VA 22110

Tue. March 23, 7PM: Burke Centre Conservancy, “The Commons” Community Center – 5701 Roberts Parkway, Burke, VA 22015

Wed. March 24, 7PM: P.R.T.C. Board Room 2nd Floor – 14700 Potomac Mills Road, Woodbridge, VA 22192

Tue. March 30, 12PM: V.R.E. Offices, 1500 King Street, Suite 202, Alexandria, VA 22314

Wed. March 31, 12PM: The Washington Court Hotel, 525 New Jersey Avenue NW Washington, DC 20001

This message is for Alexandria riders:

We have had a couple of reports of people slipping on ice at the bottom of the stairs while exiting the station this morning.

Please be mindful that snow melts during the day and freezes again at night while the temperature is low. What may look like water, may in fact be ice. Please use caution whenever walking.

We have alerted the persons responsible for removing the ice.

Train Talk:ABC Photo Lab Will Begin Towing Cars on Monday
February 19, 2010 1:15 PM

Towing of Unauthorized Vehicles Begins Monday

As you may know, VRE no longer leases the parking lot adjacent to the ABC Photo Lab in Manassas. Due to the increasing number of unauthorized cars now parking there, the owner of the lot will begin towing commuters’ cars beginning Monday, February 22nd.

This is the lot farthest from the station on Prince William Street, past the R parking lots. A map of the Manassas parking is embedded in this Train Talk. You may park in the RED highlighted areas and the lots you cannot park in are designated with an “X” in the middle, including the ABC lot next to Fairview Avenue. The ABC lot still has signs designating it as commuter parking, however; the City of Manassas is working on taking them down.

We understand parking is tight at Manassas (as well as Broad Run and Manassas Park) but due to the lack of additional grant funding, VRE is unable to pursue a new lease at this lot.

REVISION: The map is not easily visible by most passengers. It has since been posted at http://www.vre.org/service/stations/mss_parking_map.pdf.
