This message is for all VRE riders:

VRE to Operate Full Schedule on Monday, February 1

VRE has been working around the clock since the snow stopped falling to ensure that you have a safe commute tomorrow. At this time, all of our platforms have been cleared and almost all of our parking lots. The only parking lot that we know has not been plowed is the Leeland Road lot. We are working with VDOT to ensure that this lot is cleared before service tomorrow morning.

With that said, there has been quite a bit of melting today, which could make for slippery conditions in the morning. Please allow yourself some extra time to get to the station platform. Also be sure to use the handrails as you get on and off the train cars tomorrow.

Train Talk:New Extension Open
January 27, 2010 4:10 PM

Lights are out, please use caution

As we said, the new extension is open and ready for use, however, the lights around the extension are not working properly so please use caution exiting the train near this area. Our contractor has been called in and we are working to put in temporary lighting until the permanent lighting issue has been resolved.

Thanks for your patience.

Train Talk:News You Can Use
January 27, 2010 12:41 PM

Burke Centre Platform Extension Now Open!

As you may have noticed, the Burke Centre platform extension is now open for use. Now that you can walk on it, the next step is to add an additional TVM and video message sign with a PA system on that end to get the most out of the extension.

We hope you enjoy the longer platform.

Train Talk:Weekly Newsletter
January 26, 2010 1:58 PM

The following is in this edition of Train Talk:
1) Changes to the Youth Fare Program
2) Monthly Ticket Reminder

1) Changes to the Youth Fare Program

Last week we sent out a notice about the change in the Youth Fare Program. Originally we had planned that on February 15, 2010, VRE would require youths ages 11 to 18 to have a VRE Reduced Fare Youth ID when purchasing discount tickets and while riding the trains on those tickets. This date has been pushed back to March 1st.

Please remember that parents alone may not purchase the tickets with the ID (the youth using the ticket must be present at the time of purchase).

Reduced Fare tickets are only available for purchase at select vendors near our inner city stations. The application for VRE Reduced Fare Youth ID can be found on-line at http://www.vre.org/programs/PDF/youth_app.pdf.

2) Monthly Ticket Reminder

February is around the corner, so this is a reminder for all of you Monthly ticket holders to start buying your February Monthly tickets if you haven’t done so already.

Monday, February 1st will be a grace period for Monthly VRE ticket holders, but be sure to have your new Monthly tickets for Tuesday.

The following is in this edition of Train Talk:
1) Old Town Transit Shop Has TLCs
2) Lost Ticket? A Receipt is Required for Reissue
3) No Parking on Piper Lane
4) Burke Centre Now a Stop on Amtrak Northeast Regional Service
5) Changes to the Youth Fare Program
6) Presidents Day – No VRE Service

1) Old Town Transit Shop Has TLCs

The off-site vendor in Alexandria, Old Town Transit Shop, is now selling TLCs and currently has February TLCs in stock.

Please visit them near the corner of Duke and Diagonal Road (next to the Embassy Suites, across from the King Street Metro) for a TLC or any of your ticket needs. They are open Monday-Friday, 7AM to 7PM.

2) Lost Ticket? A Receipt is Required for Reissue

Just a reminder that if you lost your Monthly Ticket or TLC, you need the receipt you received when you made the purchase in order to for us to reissue the ticket. It is helpful to keep this in a separate place after your purchase for this very reason. VRE allows two reissues of a Monthly Ticket or the VRE portion of a TLC in a calendar year.

And just in case you were wondering, a receipt will not substitute for a valid ticket when riding the trains.

3) No Parking on Piper Lane

Some have noticed the dangerous conditions on Piper Lane due to the cars parking there. As a result, Prince William County will post “No Parking” signs on the road later this week or early next week. No cars on Piper Lane will open up the sight distance, or the length of roadway visible to the driver, making for safer travelling conditions on the road and will prevent cars from blocking the travel way.

We understand that this will add to the parking frustration at Broad Run, but it must be done in the interest of safety. Prince William County has an interest in building a parking deck at the station and has agreed to pay for an environmental analysis and preliminary engineering study which should start later this year. Assuming that we can also secure funding for design and construction in a timely fashion, the opening of a deck will not be for at least four years.

In the interim, we are looking at short term solutions with Prince William County that include adding spaces or starting a new shuttle service. Both of these options are not guaranteed, but we are pursuing the possibilities. More feasible options are parking at alternate stations; Manassas only used 73% of its available parking in December and for those who live in-between the Manassas and Fredericksburg Lines, Woodbridge only used 60% of parking in the same month. Another alternative is to start a carpool with other riders who share the same schedule. For those riders on Facebook, feel free to list any carpool information in the Discussions section. We know that these are not the best answers but we appreciate your patience while we work for a deck at Broad Run.

4) Burke Centre Now a Stop on Amtrak Northeast Regional Service

Amtrak and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation recently announced that Burke Centre is now a stop of the Northeast Regional service between Lynchburg and the Northeast Corridor. Burke residents now have direct service to points north of D.C. every day of the week, including weekends. The same is true for those who live near the corridor that wish to visit Burke.

We are happy that our VRE station can help bring rail awareness to Virginia and Amtrak riders.

5) Changes to the Youth Fare Program

Beginning February 15, 2010, VRE will require youths ages 11 to 18 to have a VRE Reduced Fare Youth ID when purchasing discount tickets and while riding the trains on those tickets. Parents alone may not purchase the tickets with the ID (the youth using the ticket must be present at the time of purchase).

Reduced Fare tickets are only available for purchase at select vendors near our inner city stations. The application for VRE Reduced Fare Youth ID will be on-line later this week. Stay tuned to our website for the update.

6) Presidents Day – No VRE Service

This is an early reminder that Presidents Day, or Washington’s Birthday as it is known in some circles, is Monday, February 15, 2010. However you refer to the holiday, VRE will not operate service on that date. Regular service will resume on Tuesday, February 16, 2010.
